Sometimes I feel as if I’ve written everything there is to say about dispatch consoles. I’ve taken a deep dive into everything from ergonomics to acoustics and from cables to cupholders. But I need to remind myself that for you—our valued customer—remodeling or building a dispatch center may be a once-in-a-career proposition. You start exploring your options and find that the possibilities are endless.
So let me share my thoughts—based on more than a decade of experience—on what’s important in a dispatch console from the ground up.
- Sit-to-Stand Consoles with Ergonomic Support
Sit-to-stand consoles are a must for long shifts. Look for models that adjust easily and save settings, especially on shared desks. Make sure they meet BIFMA standards for sturdiness. Combined with ergonomic monitor mounting and desktop placement, this setup helps prevent eyestrain, neck pain, and other common dispatcher issues.
- Highly Functional Desktops
The desktop should be more than just a work surface. It should support sit-to-stand functionality while being practical and durable. Dual and curved surface models are best (when possible), since they're the most ergonomically sound and they bring everything within arm’s reach. I also strongly favor easy-to-clean laminate materials that resist scratches and stains.
- Monitor Mounts & Cable Management
With dispatchers using up to eight monitors, flexibility and organization are key. Customizable mounts (like Xybix’s patented Rollervision) allow ergonomic positioning. Meanwhile, advanced cable management systems—not just Velcro and duct tape—help prevent hazards and maintain a clean look.
- Intelligent Computer & Equipment Storage
Efficient storage solutions free up space, improve airflow, and make for easier maintenance. Whether it's under-desk cabinets, back-mounted PCs, or floor-level compartments, keeping equipment accessible yet out of the way is essential.
- Personal Lighting & Climate Controls
Lighting has a major impact on performance and well-being. Features like bias and task lighting, LED options to support Circadian rhythms, and even footwell safety lights help create a productive space. Personal fans and heaters ensure that users are able to operate in a the climate they find most comfortable and productive.
- Noise-Reducing Panels for Privacy
Noise and distractions can impact focus. Today’s panel options—noise-reducing full and half walls, acrylic toppers, and whiteboards—can help define space without closing it off. A good designer can tailor the solution for privacy, acoustics, and aesthetics.
- Design Services & a Systems Approach
Dispatch furniture shouldn’t exist in a vacuum. A comprehensive systems approach includes layout planning, ADA/electrical/fire compliance, and coordinated finishes for a cohesive workspace. Take advantage of companies that offer design services to bring the whole dispatch center together.
As you might guess, at Xybix we have gone out of our way to ensure that we have all of these things. I highly recommend checking out our "Products and Features" playlist on YouTube to see all of these things and more:
There are plenty of other important factors when considering new consoles, too! Have some in mind that I didn’t mention? Drop us a line and let us know!
