In radiology, a primary benefit of speech recognition (SR) software is the time savings. With SR, radiologists can turn reports around faster, leading to increased efficiency, higher productivity, and better patient outcomes. Experts assured Radiology Today that voice solutions are “100% essential to their workflow because that time savings is so critical,” and that “Accurate and rapid turnaround of reports can ultimately improve the treatment and outcomes of patients with complex conditions requiring complex treatments.”
To provide time savings that lead to these benefits, the speech recognition must be accurate. Beyond selecting the latest technology in SR, healthcare organizations can drive accuracy in SR through thoughtful design of the radiology workstations and reading room environment.
Radiologists who use tabletop (boom) microphones need an imaging desk that allows the mic to be placed in the right place for accurate SR. While the “right place” for a mic will vary among radiologists, manufacturers recommend placing the mic as close as possible to the mouth (about 1–3 inches) but outside the breath stream. A dual-surface desk that allows the monitors and desktop to move independently helps achieve this placement.
The average imaging desk needs to manage 4 monitors, including a ~$30K monitor for reading and an additional one for using SR software. Given the critical nature of the work and the expense of the equipment, the imaging desk needs to provide a stable and adjustable monitor array. Reducing background noise, echoes, and distractions is important to SR accuracy and overall productivity. Look for steel frames, non-combustible materials, and a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) rating of at least 0.75.
